General Questions

Why are Uvero earphones better than the ones I already have?

Uvero earphones are better for a few reasons. First, the sound quality of the earphone has been engineered by the premier maker of high end, in-ear stage monitors stadium musicians (think Taylor Swift, Dave Matthews). Second, the sound-isolating, tailor-made earpieces fit you and only you—so they are comfortable, won’t easily fall out, and their precise seal isolates exterior sounds. The net result: you can listen to better sounds at safer volumes.

What’s the difference between the earphone and the earpiece?

The earphone is the part that generates the sound. The earpiece is the exclusive, tailor-made part that goes into your ear and delivers the sound to your eardrum.

In-ear listening devices go by many different names. But they all have one thing in common—they are made to be one-size-fits-all, when the reality is that one-size-fits-none. Uvero is made to fit you, and only you.

Can other people borrow my earphones?

Maybe if you have an identical twin. But generally no—the earpieces are tailor-made to fit you and only you. Anyone else trying to wear your earpieces will feel discomfort or won’t be able to put them in because we all have different-shaped ears and ear canals. Also, the sound will not be delivered as purely to someone else’s ears, so they won’t get the superior sound experience. Tailor-made is good because, let’s be honest, sharing earphones is kind of gross.

What’s all this about listening safety and health?

We listen to our personal devices far more than we ever have. And we mostly do it on the go—listening to our favorite tunes while walking down a city street, or watching a movie on a plane or at the airport while sitting out another delay! We are surrounded by so much external noise that we try to drown it out by turning up the volume. Consider that the ambient noise in a typical city street is 80 decibels (dB). To listen to your sound, you are competing with that noise level, so you naturally turn up the volume. The danger level for listening at length is 85 dB. So you’re constantly cranking up the volume above the danger level and risking long-term damage to your hearing.

I already have earphones. Can I get tailor-made earpieces for them?

Uvero is continually developing new products and has developed custom earpieces for models of Apple, Bose, Etymotic and JayBird earphones. Have a suggested earphone model for which Uvero should develop tailor-made earpieces? Drop us a line

Can I get Uvero earphones without the tailor-made earpieces?

No. We designed the Uvero™ earphones to work specifically with our tailor-made earpieces. Without the earpieces they wouldn’t fit your ears correctly.

The Scanning Process

How long does the scan take?

Each ear scan takes approximately 1-3 minutes. In total, taking your order and scanning your ears will take about 20 minutes.

How do you scan my ear, and what does it feel like?

First, a camera that’s inside a small balloon is placed in your ear canal by one of our certified scanning technicians. The technician then inflates the balloon with a dilute solution of red dye (food coloring) dissolved in water. This feels kind of like having a small water balloon in your ear.  You might notice the cool temperature of the water. The technician then moves the camera around inside the balloon to measure the ear from inside the balloon.

Does it hurt?

Most people say that ear scanning is comfortable. Some people report a sensation of pressure when the camera is first inserted into the ear canal. If you have had ear surgeries or chronic problems with your ears, please let us know.

What if I have wax?

Wax happens! It is actually a sign of a healthy ear. If there is only a little bit of wax, we should still be able to scan your ears. If you have more than a little wax, and we can’t see your eardrum or feel that the wax will not let us get the true shape of your ear canal, we may suggest that you reschedule your scanning appointment until after you visit your doctor or nurse to have it removed or use an over-the-counter ear wax-removal kit.

Is there an age limit?

You must be at least 12 years old to have your ears scanned. If you are under 18 years old, you need signed, in-person permission from a parent or legal guardian.

How is the shape of my ear measured?

The camera takes detailed pictures that are digitized into a 3D model made of more than 100,000 points.

Can I get Uvero earphones without the tailor-made earpieces?

No. We designed the Uvero™ earphones to work specifically with our tailor-made earpieces. Without the earpieces they wouldn’t fit your ears correctly.

What happens when the scan is finished?

When the scans of both ears are finished, the results are transmitted to our lab, where the Uvero production team will begin the process of creating custom earpieces that are unique to you and only you.

Getting your Uveros

How long will it take to get my product?

We know that you are eager to get your Uvero earphones or custom earpieces! It typically takes 5 business days to tailor-make your product. We will contact you when they are ready.

Can you mail the earpieces to me?

Yes, we can. However, there is a shipping and handling fee. If you come to pick them up, we can be sure they fit well, show you how best to put them in your ears, and answer any additional questions you may have.

Using the earpieces

How do I know which ear they go in?

Your custom earpieces are labeled with dots. The one with the red dot goes in the right ear. The one with the black dot goes in the left ear.

How do I clean them?

You can wipe the earpieces off with a cloth that has been moistened in water. Paper towels are typically less linty than facial tissues. Do not use any chemicals, such as alcohol, to clean the earpieces, since these could cause them to discolor and/or harden. Do not poke anything down the sound tubes of the earpieces, as you could damage the speaker in the earphone.

You can also completely remove the earpieces by gently twisting them off the earphones. Wash in mild soap, like hand soap or dish soap. Be sure to rinse well and dry thoroughly before putting them back on your earphones.

Earpiece safety

Can I ever push the earpiece in too far?

The Uvero custom earpieces are designed so that you will not be able to insert them too deeply. They only go about halfway into your ear canal, and do not get close to the eardrum.

Will the custom earpieces damage my hearing because they bring the sound closer to my eardrum?

Listening at levels too loud can damage your hearing with any headphones. However, we designed our sound-isolating earpieces specifically so that you can listen to better-quality sound at lower volumes because you are not trying to drown out the sounds of your surroundings.

Can I wear the headset with custom earpieces while I am out exercising?

Sound-isolating earphones might be ideal for you to use in a gym—on a treadmill or a stationary exercise machine—to cancel out the machine noise and whatever high-energy techno tunes the gym is pumping out. But using sound-isolating earphones when running or cycling on roads places you at risk. Do not use sound-isolating earphones when awareness of your surroundings is important for safety.
